You know what I’ve been thinking? St. Mary’s girls flag football team couldn’t have captured its three-peat without this underclassman.
Sophia Lafontant put on a show at Merrimack College, where the Spartans (18-0) completed a perfect season with Thursday’s 12-6 win against Leominster in the Div. 1 championship game.
The quarterback was named Most Valuable Player after throwing a pair of touchdown passes to Kaileigh Patterson and Eleni Echevarria. She also snatched an interception on defense.
Rising to the occasion, do-it-all Lafontant broke up a fourth-down pass late in the game to give St. Mary’s its crown.
“She is a great quarterback — one of the best around — but also a terrific defensive player,” said coach Terrell Patterson. “It was a really good defensive game. After playing like that, the way the girls competed, I’m just ecstatic. … This is a really young team. Sophia is just finishing up her sophomore year.”
The Spartans rocked and rolled through the semifinals with a 25-0 smashing of Wachusett. The program hasn’t lost a game in three years.
Sophia, good week.
