To the editor:
I have seen several articles talking about Lynn’s budget and how it was voted down due to its decreased funding for legal assistance for immigrants. The proponents want $1.6 million. With this line of thinking, the city should pay all Lynn residents’ legal fees. If I have legal problems, I have to pay for them myself. This feels like student loan “forgiveness” — what about my mortgage and credit card balances? Will they be forgiven? I have no animosity toward immigrants at all. If they are here, working, supporting their families, and paying taxes — great. But absorbing legal fees seems like a bit much. The city has offered $50k. How about $0?
