LYNN — The Fire Department responded to a report that an individual fell from a rock cliff, sustaining injuries to his lower extremities in the area of Stone Tower in the Lynn Woods, on Saturday.
Fire and police officials, both on and off duty, responded to the report during the department’s family weekend hosted by its unions.
Lynn Fire Department’s regional dispatch received a call from the individual reporting that he had fallen while rock climbing recreationally. He was alone in the Lynn Woods, fire officials wrote in a Facebook post.
The initial responder to the incident was one of the volunteer firefighters at the event, Fire Chief Dan Sullivan said.
“He was able to identify the problem and start to assess the scene,” Sullivan said. The initial responder did not have the equipment to treat the individual.
Engine Company Seven, which was already in the area for the family day event, responded and dispatched the department’s UTVs, which are stored at the entrance of the woods for any response in the 2300-acre woods.
Shortly after they arrived at Stone Tower, the individual was located with assistance from the Lynn Fire dispatcher, who was still on the phone with the individual.
“He was quickly located down a rocky cliff,” fire officials said in a statement.
Engine Company Seven Captain Stephen Stille advised that other companies were needed “for manpower and an extended carryout,” the statement read.
Due to the remote location and the patient’s injuries, the individual was transported by UTV and then carried through the woods. He was then transported to Salem Hospital, fire officials said.
The on-duty Engine Company 10, Ladder Company Four, District Chief Robert McIntosh, a safety officer, Medic Company One, and the EMS services unit were also on scene to assist.
“It’s just, it’s so good to see the right people in the right spot at the right time,” Sullivan said, adding that the work of the department reflected professionalism.
