LYNN — A fleet of the world’s most magnificent tall ships and military ships will be sailing into the port of Boston this weekend, and Lynn English High School’s Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets will be among those helping to welcome them.
The award-winning unit will participate in the opening ceremonies of Sail Boston, as part of Sail250, marking the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. The event kicks off on Saturday, July 11 and the ships will remain in the harbor through July 16. The cadets will present the participating nations’ flags. Organizers expect more than 60 ships from more than 20 nations.
Sgt. Maj. Jose Beato, who leads the Lynn English program, said the MCJROTC are the only cadets in the ceremony, which begins at 9 a.m., adding that most other participants are active-duty military.
“They’re really excited,” he said. “Some of the countries represented are where their parents are from, so they’re hoping to present those flags.”
The unit’s color guard will also participate in a color presentation during the National Anthem.
This is the second time the Lynn English program has been invited to participate in a Sail Boston event. They last participated in 2017, when the event brought 56 tall ships from 13 nations to Boston Harbor. They also participated in Marine 250 last August, which celebrated 250 years of Marine Corps history, and was part of Marine Week Boston. The event was held at Manning Field in Lynn, and the cadets demonstrated their skills through a drill performance.
“Anytime the Marine Corps are involved for some of these major events, they often call us because of the cadets’ reputation,” Beato said. “It’s great for them to participate because they’re practicing what we learn in the classroom in terms of responsibility and service. It builds confidence by doing these big events.”
