LYNN — After scoring 27 runs on Monday, Lynn Tech’s bats stayed hot at Fraser Field as the Tigers (3-0) smashed Notre Dame Cristo Rey 15-0 across four innings Wednesday.
Tech scored in every inning — including a nine-run third — and all batters reached base. Riley Driscoll earned the win from the mound.
“Overall, I think the guys hit the ball well today. I think that was the biggest emphasis of ours — to keep the bats going,” said coach Eddie Lewis. “I’m very proud of the way the guys are looking. They’re playing good baseball early, which is what we want.”
As for highlights — much to the crowd’s delight — look no further than when Jacob Garcia hit a ball over the center fielder’s head that reached the fence. Garcia rounded all the bases for a two-run, inside-the-park home run.
During the same inning, Colin Newhall drove a pitch to a similar part of the field for another two-run homer to give the hosts a 15-run cushion.
Despite the eye-catching at-bats, Lewis was more impressed with the duo’s baserunning.
“They were really solid hits. Whenever you hit inside-the-park home runs, guys are running very hard,” he said. “On the base paths, we’ve been looking to run a hard 90 and if we get the opportunity to take extra bases, we’re running hard and that’s how the two of them were able to get four bases off their hits.”
Not only were the Tigers dialed in offensively, but pitching was impressive with Driscoll (2 IP, 6 K) and Chris Boyd (2 IP, 5 K) splitting time.
“I thought they pitched very well. Riley came in and did a great job of setting the tone for us. He threw strikes, which were good early. The guys didn’t have to make too many plays behind him, which is good for us,” Lewis said. “Chris came in and did a great job at making sure these guys weren’t going to produce any runs so we could close out the game.”
Through three games, the Tigers have crossed home plate 49 times. One reason for the high scoring: fast starts.
“We want to stay hot and that’s what we’re looking to do,” said Lewis, whose lineup scored four first-inning runs to set the tone. “We’re trying to emphasize making sure that we’re swinging early and often to keep the bats going. It’s been helping us produce a lot of runs and the guys are seeing the ball well.”
Tech looks to continue its winning ways on Friday when the Tigers travel to face Minuteman Regional (2-3) at 4:30 p.m.
