Roundup: Marblehead nets 15 in win

The Marblehead girls lacrosse team came out of the gates fast, scoring 13 goals in the first half en route to a 15-4 win over Northeastern Conference rival Danvers. Zoe Dwyer led the Magicians with five goals and four assists, while teammate Addie Co-Peep finished with a hat trick.

Emma Ryan scored two goals, while Ella McConnell, Gwen Potter, Claire Burke, Elisabeth Greely and Sydney Moniz each added one. Molly Bullard made eight saves in net.

“It was a strong win to start the week. Looking forward to seeing Peabody in another NEC matchup on Wednesday,” Marblehead head coach Annie Madden said.

Danvers was led by Liv Henry and Addie Moore, who both had two assists.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Masconomet 9

Peabody 8

Masconomet needed overtime to defeat Peabody.

Leah Bresnahan scored five goals for Peabody and was a constant threat on offense. Victoria Vaz had six draw controls, while Sophia Galbiati (2 goals) and Arianna Alvarado (1 goal) also scored.

Eleni Spack made nine saves for the Tanners.

Swampscott 17

Gloucester 4

Swampscott cruised to a comfortable win at Blocksidge Field.

Lila Cilley (5 goals), Reagan Pelletier (4) and Bridget Maloney (3) led the offense. Olivia Bouffard, Lea Beatrice, Quinn Kelleher, Vera Conley and Bridget Urbano each added a goal.

Victoria Pierro had a game-high four assists, and Lilah Caplan made seven saves.

St. Mary’s 14

Archbishop Williams 4

St. Mary’s (4-0) remained undefeated with a dominant win at Manning Field.

Ava Nason (5 goals) and Alyssa Norden (3) led the offense, while Keira Twomey and Emma Gustin helped limit Archbishop Williams to four goals.

Saugus 11

Salem 8

Behind a hat trick from Nikki Breton, Saugus secured a win to improve to 4-1.

Brooke Diaz scored two goals despite primarily playing defense. Sydney Ferreira and Teaghan Arsenault each added a goal, while Aly Mabee and Mara Faiella both scored twice.

Jordyn Ripley-Deminski made nine saves to earn the win.

BOYS LACROSSE

Hamilton-Wenham 14

Lynnfield 11

The Pioneers couldn’t protect home turf against Cape Ann League rival Hamilton-Wenham.

Sean Bridges netted seven goals, while John Powers (3 goals, 1 assist) and Brendan Driscoll (1 goal) also scored. Sam Curley (2 assists), Angelo Covino and Josh Bernabei each recorded at least one assist.

Marblehead 13

Danvers 8

Behind five goals from Will Kinahan, the Magicians defeated Danvers on the road. Tyler Forbes (4 goals, 2 assists) and Reid Wysor (1 goal, 3 assists) contributed in the win.

Colin Maniaci made 16 saves in net for Marblehead.

Salem 8

Lynn 3

Lynn got goals from Denim Dembro (2) and Finn Dalferro, but it wasn’t enough against Salem.

Lynn will look to bounce back Wednesday against Medford.

St. Mary’s 18

Malden Catholic 7

St. Mary’s (1-3) picked up its first win of the season.

Sal Brogna, Finn Racki and Caleb Racki led the offense, while Chris Grossman and goalie Adam Fila helped keep Malden Catholic in check.

BASEBALL

Lynn Classical 4

Malden 3

Lynn Classical beat Malden 4-3 at Fraser Field. The Rams trailed 3-2 in the sixth inning before Daynel Almonte tied the game with an RBI triple. Gavin Collins then laid down a squeeze bunt to drive in Almonte for the game-winning run.

Braeden Ohanessian pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out two.

Lynn Classical was led offensively by Emerson Lara, who went 2-for-3 with a triple and a two-run home run.

“That was a full team effort today. Emerson Lara had a huge game offensively, including a home run, Gavin Collins had a perfect squeeze for the winning run, and Braeden Ohanessian kept us in it all game on the mound,” Rams head coach Jason Rogato said. “I’m proud of how our team competed today. Everyone played a role. That was a team win.”

Bishop Fenwick 13

Cardinal Spellman 2

The Crusaders (4-0) remained undefeated, cruising to a 13-2 win over Cardinal Spellman. Andrew Kiricoples went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Both Kiricoples and Odin Garron (2 RBI) hit home runs in the win.

Nick McFadden pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing six hits.

Xaverian Brothers 4

St. John’s Prep 1

Home-field advantage wasn’t enough for St. John’s Prep, as the offense couldn’t get going.

Collin Thornburgh had two hits and an RBI, while Christian McCarthy also had two hits. The Eagles will look to bounce back Wednesday when they travel to BC High at 4 p.m.

Masconomet 3

Peabody 2

Peabody came up on the wrong end of a narrow defeat. 

Liam Smith pitched seven innings, allowing six hits, one walk and two earned runs while striking out five.

Ethan Waybret went 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and a stolen base. Jack Smith and Mark Bettencourt each added a single.

Everett 6

Lynn English 4

Everett scored five runs in the fourth inning to take control.

Kyle Furlong, Ewerd Beato and Josue Prandy each had a hit for Lynn English. Gilbert Galva and Angel Thomas recorded an RBI.

St. Mary’s 11

Bishop Stang 7

St. Mary’s won its third straight behind a strong all-around performance from Rolky Brea Arias.

The senior had two hits including a home run and five RBI while also earning the win on the mound (5 1/3 innings, 7 K, 5 ER). Nate Cutone added four RBI.

SOFTBALL

St. Mary’s 3

Bishop Stang 2

Despite falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Spartans responded with runs in the first, second and third innings.

Sydney Wells drove in a run with a groundout in the first to tie the game. In the second, Adyson Newhall doubled in a run to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. Catherine Newbury added an RBI double in the third to extend the lead.

Newbury (5 IP, 5 K, 3 BB) earned the win in the circle, while Newhall recorded the save.

Lynn Classical 15

Malden 0

The Rams (2-1) had their bats going in a dominant road win. Aysia Olaes (3 IP, 5 K), Emma Chevalier (1 IP, 2 K) and Olivia Rodriguez (1 IP, 1 K) combined on a one-hit shutout.

Olaes went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Chevalier finished 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and three runs scored.

Mia Duncan went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and a double, while McKenna Duncan had two doubles and two RBI.

“Pitchers did a great job attacking the strike zone, and the defense was flawless,” Rams coach Joe Morin said. “I’m proud of the team’s effort on defense. Big game on Wednesday at Medford.”

Everett 24

Lynn English 11

Lynn English’s offense produced, but Everett proved too much.

Annika Johansson went 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. The Bulldogs scored five runs in the first inning and added six more in the fourth.

Lynn English finished with 14 hits. Jianny Bernabel, Adriana Martinez, Johansson, Cassandra Miranda and Zilahny Garcia each had multiple hits.

Saugus 24

Melrose 15

In what Saugus head coach Steve Almquist described as one of the most “bizarre games”  he’s been involved in, Saugus (3-3) got the better of Melrose in a “slugfest.” 

Saugus had to rally multiple times being down 9-3, and 10-7 in the game and then down 14-10 in the top of the seventh. With one out, Saugus scored 14 runs, sending 20 batters to the plate in the inning. 

The Sachems leaned on their eighth graders as Hannah Strout (4 RBI), Aubrey Demonte (2), and Jenna O’Donnell (3) came up with big at-bats for Saugus. 

Sophomore Angie Dow had three hits including a triple and was “fantastic” in left field according to Almquist. 

BOYS TENNIS

Marblehead 5

Swampscott 0

The Magicians earned bragging rights over rival Swampscott and improved to 4-1.

Ty Cooper defeated Sam Schepens 7-6 (7-2) at first singles before Schepens was forced to medically forfeit due to injury. At second singles, TJ Kelly beat Victor Zeissig 6-1, 6-2, and Alex Boehning topped Zac Goldman 6-4, 6-1 at third singles.

In doubles, Adam Loughlin and Cordt Menzler won 6-3, 6-0 over Julian Flacke and Alex Levine. At second doubles, Filip Wabno and Caleb Sidman defeated Jax Walker and Leo Hellmann Flatt 6-1, 6-0.

GIRLS TENNIS

Swampscott 4

Marblehead 1

Swampscott’s singles play continued to impress, with all three players earning wins. Nikki Carr defeated Samara Dosch 6-2, 6-3 at first singles. Ginger Gregoire beat Callie Ceilmore 6-0, 6-1, and Ana Eccles won 6-2, 6-4 over Sophie Li.

At first doubles, Marblehead’s Joy Meshulami and Caroline Bruett defeated Ava O’Donnell and Alexia O’Donnell 6-1, 6-4. At second doubles, Eve Byrne and Lilly Carr won 7-5, 6-2 over Harper Mooney and Lily O’Keefe.

Peabody 5

Salem 0

The Tanners (1-2) earned their first win of the season at home.

Alexandra Kourtelidis won 6-2, 6-3 at first singles, rallying from a 0-3 deficit in the second set. Tiffany Bettencourt won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. Yasnelly Fernandez didn’t drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles.

Anna Maciel and Artemis Greko won 6-3, 6-2 at first doubles. Shivaun Galvin and Lilly Hunt earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at second doubles.

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn Tech 3

Nashoba Valley Tech 0

Lynn Tech earned a sweep (25-8, 25-16, 25-11) on the road. Elmer Duran led the Tigers (1-4) with 15 assists, three aces and two digs, while Amauri Bermudez had 10 kills.

Lynn Classical 3

Lynn English 1

Lynn Classical took down traditional rivals Lynn English in four sets (25-17, 23-25, 25-20, and 25-14). 

The Rams were led by senior Kenzel Lantano (33 assists, 4 kills, 8 digs, 3 aces) and junior Riches Tep (12 kills, 1 ace, 5 digs). 

The Rams improved to 6-1 on the season and remain perfect (3-0) in the Greater Boston League. Lynn English falls to 2-3. 

“Tonight was a good win for us. Anytime we can beat English it feels good. They have a strong team this year, they play hard and never give up on points,” Lynn Classical’s coach Chris LeBlanc said. “We changed our lineup tonight and Jaytana Truong got his first varsity start at middle and really did well for us. Kenzel, Riches and Long Pham really led us all night.”
