It was a tough day for Lynnfield’s boys and girls lacrosse teams as both squads fell Thursday.
The boys traveled to No. 6 Abington and lost, 14-4, in the Division 4 Round of 16.
Matt Falzarano (goal), John Powers (2) and Sam Curley (1) got on the scoresheet for Lynnfield, while Powers, Sean Bridges and Angelo Covino registered assists.
On the girls side, the Pioneers made the trip to No. 4 Nipmuc Regional and lost a narrow matchup between two of the top teams in Division 4, 12-11.
Lynnfield trailed 4-2 after the first quarter, but outscored Nipmuc 4-2 in the second to tie the game at 6 at halftime. The Pioneers held a 10-8 lead after three quarters, but Nipmuc had enough quality to squeak past Lynnfield in the fourth.
BOYS LACROSSE
No. 5 Winthrop 17
No. 12 East Bridgewater 4
Winthrop rolled to a postseason win to advance to the Elite Eight.
The No. 5 Vikings (17-3) defeated No. 12 East Bridgewater, 17-4, to continue their playoff run. Winthrop has now outscored opponents 30-5 in the postseason.
The Vikings will hit the road to face No. 4 Ipswich in the quarterfinals, with the date and time to be determined.
BASEBALL
No. 5 Catholic Memorial 4
No. 12 St. John’s Prep 2
The Eagles got the start they hoped for, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after drawing three walks before a fourth batter was hit by a pitch to force in the game’s first run. St. John’s Prep added another run on a groundout that scored a runner from third.
Catholic Memorial got a run back immediately in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Carson McCarthy. The Knights then tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the third.
Catholic Memorial’s Rocky Vankowski ripped a two-run home run to give the hosts a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning.
St. John’s Prep had a chance to tie the game in the seventh inning with two runners on base. However, Catholic Memorial’s Jacoby Hogencamp (5 1/3 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 9 K) struck out the final batter of the game to send the Knights to the quarterfinals.

Marblehead boys tennis is headed to the Final Four after a road upset.
The No. 5 Magicians knocked off No. 4 Walpole, 3-2 in Div. 2, to punch their ticket to the state semifinals.
The Magicians will face the winner of Friday’s matchup between top-seeded Westborough and No. 8 Hingham.
