SWAMPSCOTT — One night after putting up 14 runs against West Lynn, Peabody West’s 12-year-old All-Stars stole the show again. Their offense continued to surge, plating 12 runs against Winthrop in a 12-2 win at Swampscott Middle School.
Peabody West capitalized in the fourth inning with nine runs. Brayden Coburn, Cooper Williams, Connor Segee, and Jaxson Vallantini all registered at least one RBI to put the pressure on.
However, it was Winthrop that struck first. Winthrop scored twice in the top of the first inning to get the team off to a hot start. Max Murray hit a double to center field, scoring the opening run of the game. Then, an error by Peabody West scored a Winthrop baserunner to make it 2-0.
It didn’t take long for Peabody West to knot things up. A single from William Sabia tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the first inning.
From there, a single from Vallantini gave Peabody West a 3-2 lead in the third inning. The boys didn’t surrender the lead for the rest of the night.
“It was a big win tonight. I am super proud of these kids. We have been clicking offensively after starting off the tournament slow,” said Peabody West manager Shaun Coburn. “We have received contributions from every kid in the lineup, which has been great to see.
“We have really stressed that we are one unit and we are asking the kids to buy into their roles — whatever it may be — and they have done that. It’s just great we get to keep playing baseball; we are having a lot of fun.”
Robbie Stanziani (4 IP, 8 K, 2 BB, 4 H) earned the win from the mound. Offensively, Vallantini and Sabia led Peabody West with two hits apiece.
Despite the loss, Winthrop manager Joe Murphy praised Stanziani and believes this is just the start of his players’ careers.
“The Winthrop boys had a nice run and have a bright future. It’s definitely the beginning of their baseball careers,” Murphy said. “Peabody West played a good game and their pitcher definitely had us off-balance. We wish them the best.”
Peabody West will take on Lynnfield on Thursday at 5:45 p.m. with the location TBD.
