MARBLEHEAD — A pizza pickup turned into a $1 million surprise for Marblehead resident Richard Mulombre, whose quick stop at a Lynn convenience store produced a winning Powerball ticket.

Mulombre claimed the $1 million prize Thursday at the Massachusetts State Lottery’s Dorchester headquarters after matching the first five numbers on a Quic Pic ticket in the Saturday, July 18, Powerball drawing, which featured a $526.4 million jackpot.

According to the Massachusetts State Lottery, Mulombre purchased the winning ticket at Quisqueya Food Mart, located at 34 Union St. in Lynn, while waiting with his children for a nearby pizza order. He told lottery officials he plans to put the winnings toward retirement.

The winning ticket also earned Quisqueya Food Mart a $10,000 bonus from the Massachusetts State Lottery.

Co-owners MD Zaman and MD Borhan Uddin said the sale marked the biggest lottery milestone since purchasing the store nearly a decade ago.

“I bought this store in 2016, almost 10 years ago,” Zaman said. “This is the first time it happened. I have never sold a $1 million ticket before.”

Zaman said he was thrilled when he learned the ticket had been sold at his store.

“Absolutely, this is amazing,” he said. “I’m feeling so great because I get the $10,000. I’m so happy with that.”

The bonus comes at a welcome time, he said, as small businesses continue to face economic challenges.

“Business is not good,” Zaman said. “I will focus the funds on my business because I put a lot of inventory in my store. The $10,000 helps. I’ll invest it back into my store for inventory.”

Although he owns several convenience stores, Zaman said none had previously sold a prize of this size.

“I have a few stores, and this is the first time I’ve sold that $1 million,” he said.

“Hopefully every month happens like this,” he added with a laugh.
