Lynn Jets fight back, fall in overtime

LYNN — The Lynn Jets (2-4) lost their third consecutive game Tuesday. Despite Somerville finding a way to win at Manning Field, 7-6 in overtime, the hosts delivered plenty of positives.

Lynn trailed 6-4 with 8:54 remaining in the fourth quarter. Shane Knowlton-Simard (2 goals) received the ball and bolted 40 yards before rifling in a goal. Then, with 4:41 to go, Jacoby Comeau (3 goals) knotted the game 6-6.

“He’s (Comeau) grown up so much,” said Lynn coach Peter Pappagianopoulos. “It’s always hard because, last year, we had two really good goal-scorers, so his job was 100 percent passing and going to the net sometimes. To take that next step — to become the No. 1 offensive player — he’s done a great job. He’s not the biggest kid, but he plays so hard.”

After four scoreless minutes to end regulation, Somerville won the opening face-off of overtime and scored on its first shot.

“They’re great kids and great workers. They all put in the effort today. I love the effort and the intensity they played with. We just couldn’t find the net,” Pappagianopoulos said. “We have a great group of kids. They’re all hard-working and they’re a joy to coach.”

Lynn’s defense, headlined by goalie Jeysac Pech, played “great,” according to Pappagianopoulos. Pech made critical saves throughout the game, including point-blank stops when the Jets were down a player or two due to penalties.

“Our goalie was a backup last year and he’s getting his first starts this year,” Pappagianopoulos said. “Julius (Serino) . . . scored twice. One was our slide never came; the other was just a really good shot. I thought he played really well. I thought Rafael (Ortiz De La Rosa) and Isaac (Ramos) played well.”

Knowlton-Simard scored the first goal of the game from distance.

“He’s an energizer bunny. He’s at 110 miles per hour, 24/7. I wouldn’t want to defend him. If he’s coming down the field at me, I would step aside,” Pappagianopoulos said. “He plays his hardest and he’s still learning how to play, but that’s not stopping him from giving his all. He’s also the nicest kid. He’s all, ‘yes, sir’ and ‘no, sir.’ He’s the perfect teammate.”

A 1-1 game, Finn Dalferro scored to snatch the lead back for Lynn. Shortly after, the Jets made a defensive stop and worked the ball upfield, leading to Comeau receiving the ball and scoring five-hole to give the Jets a 3-1 lead during the first quarter.

Somerville made a second-quarter run and tied the game by halftime.

“We’re playing well. We just couldn’t find the back of the net enough today,” Pappagianopoulos said.

Lynn is back in action Thursday when it hosts Malden at 11 a.m.
