In its quest to make the Div. 3 state tournament, Saugus’ softball team (8-8) returned to .500 with Wednesday’s 6-1 home win against Salem.
Leading the way were pitcher Sofia McCarrier (ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 K), Ari Chianca (3-for-4, RBI, 2 R), Jenna O’Donnell (1-for-2, RBI, BB), and Julia Strout, who “had an outstanding game at first base and nothing got by her,” according to coach Steve Almquist.
“We had a nice win today and the kids played outstanding in all areas,” Almquist said.

The Rams (11-5) defended home field with a five-inning mercy win against Chelsea. Olivia Rodriguez batted 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, and three RBI, while Mia Duncan batted 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.

St. Mary’s (12-3) clinched the Catholic Central League title with a road win against Cardinal Spellman. Aliza Crean-Oviedo delivered a complete-game victory. Abbey Sousa, Sydney Wells, and Jayla Walsh recorded doubles.

Classical won its 10th game and secured a spot in the Div. 2 state tournament. Jake Desmond pitched a four-inning perfect game with 12 strikeouts, while Kevin Severino (3-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R) and Brayden Curley (3-for-3, 4 RBI, 2 R) did offensive damage.

Two runs were all Marblehead needed as sophomore Yanzel Fuentes (79 pitches, 4 K) earned his second complete-game win of the spring. Ryan Angilly roped a single up the middle to win the game, while Andrew Dellacamera led the Magicians with two hits.

The Spartans improved to 13-2 with a win underneath the Fraser Field lights. Jackson Finn got things started during the second inning, scoring two runs. Rowan Merryman, Michael DeMaino (2-for-4, RBI, 2 R), Kyle Doney (2-for-3, RBI, 2 R), and Rolky Brea Arias (CG, 8 K) played well.

In set scores of 25-12, 25-5, and 25-20, Classical (13-4) sank Chelsea behind seniors Jonathan Chan (9 kills, 5 blocks), Jaytana Truong (9 kills, 2 digs), and Riches Tep (9 kills, 6 aces, 6 digs).
“Tonight was a game we knew we had to win if we wanted to still have a chance at the GBL (Greater Boston League) title,” said Classical coach Chris LeBlanc. “I was very happy with how we played — particularly in the first two sets.”
